Three-legged Bird ('Sam-jok-o' in Korean)
A Symbol of the Seoul International Drama Awards
In ancient mythology, the Three-legged Bird symbolizes the sun and is believed to foretell the future.
As its name suggests, the bird has three legs. There are various interpretations of the meaning of its three legs. Some historians and archaeologists believe that, according to the philosophy of Yin and Yang, the number three represents perfection. Therefore, ancient people believed that the bird living in the sun had three legs. Others explain that each leg represents the air, the earth, and human beings, respectively.
Historical sources show that the Three-legged Bird appears in various cultures around the world.
Samjok-o from Gakjeocheung
Samjok-o from Garlim Ohoebun Tomb No. 4
Samjok-o from a Han Dynasty Mural in Henan, China
Samjok-o from Karasunomiya Shrine in Osaka, Japan
The Three-legged Bird appears in the ancient Korean text 《Sam-guk-yu-sa》, which says that it tells people what will happen in the future and what they should do.
《Shan Hai Jing》, an ancient Chinese geographical text, also mentions a black bird with three legs living in the sun. In Japanese creation mythology, the Three-legged Bird guides the Emperor's army.
Not only in Asian cultures but also in Greek mythology, there is a story about a bird that was originally white but turned black after incurring Apollo's anger. At historic sites in Pamphylia and Lycia, the Three-legged Bird also appears in murals and on ancient coins.
The Seoul International Drama Awards adopted the image of the Three-legged Bird as its symbol, reflecting its vision of serving as a global platform for television drama and inspiring the future direction of the drama industry.
